We live in a hyper-public culture, where being seen and understood is one of our society’s highest values. While there are pros to applause, it can be a detrimental drug. It wears off very quickly and drives us to keep proving ourselves to get that fix. Over time, the good longing for greatness gets twisted into insecurity and validation and turns into a type of drug that enslaves us.
