Make a difference in the lives of children in the South Bronx by providing one-one-one homework help at A House on Beekman. As part of their after-school program, you can build relationships with Kindergarteners all the way up to 5th graders. Tutors are needed from 2:30pm to 5:30pm, Monday through Friday.
As a volunteer conversation partner, you have the opportunity to help build bridges across cultures. You’ll have the opportunity to share about yourself, learn about your conversation partner (or partners), and help immigrants practice English while meeting the emotional need that many have for community. Many of our students report having no English speaking friends. For your conversation partner, you could be the first!
One of the greatest felt needs of immigrants is the ability to speak English for communication. Lack of English leads to isolation and poor job opportunities. As a volunteer ESL teacher, you are meeting this need, empowering immigrants to participate in mainstream society. With our partners at The Open Door NJNY, you can use this opportunity to build relationships with 5-12 students over the course of 3 months.
One of the most practical ways you can help immigrant families in New York City is through financial support. Each gift helps equip and inspire students at our partner organization, The Open Door NY. Students receive ESL instruction, GED/TASC preparation, and computer literacy classes, which allow them to integrate successfully into our communities and better support their families.
If you desire to connect and build bridges with others, consider joining the welcome team at the Open Door NY. This volunteer role is focused on helping site coordinators create a safe and healthy community-oriented environment for immigrants taking classes. Tasks may include helping coordinators with the check-in process for active students & volunteers, facilitating exams for prospective students, community activities and more.
Help restore dignity to homeless New Yorkers by serving in the clothing room at the Bowery Mission. Guests are able to take warm showers each morning and then browse through our selection of donated clothes for a fresh outfit. Your tasks may include organizing, cleaning, interacting with staff and guests.
In New York City, food pantries often serve as a source of light, helping hungry families meet the most basic of needs. In Queens, the Legacy Center offers a tangible way to get involved every Thursday by packing food, managing the lines and interacting with guests.
Every day of the week, there are opportunities to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner to hungry and homeless New Yorkers. Come join us at the Bowery Mission’s Flagship and Tribeca locations, as we live out the call of Jesus to care for the marginalized.
